This month following the upcoming Seoul Art Fair launch by JaeMyung Noh, a prominent young collector from Korea, is set to inaugurate a groundbreaking addition to Seoul's art scene with the launch of Art OnO (Art One and Only). Despite Seoul's existing art fairs, Noh saw a distinct need for a fresh perspective.

At the press conference, Noh addressed inquiries regarding projected sales and notable artworks. However, it's important to note that our fair's essence transcends monetary metrics. Our primary focus is on meticulously curating a top-tier program that showcases both emerging talents and established artists.

Featuring 36 exhibitors, Art OnO boasts a diverse lineup including trendsetting galleries like Ester Schipper and Gallery Baton alongside esteemed names such as CYLINDER and P21. The fair is slated to run from April 19th to 21st at SETEC in Seoul.

Many art fairs are currently taking place in major cities around the world, keeping everyone in the art scene busy during Q1 of 2024. However, the most concerning matter in the whole industry right now is whether the art market will rebound this year.

Shanghai West Bund 2023

The art market in 2023 can be described as quite bleak, yet art exhibitions were thriving. According to a report by UBS, despite declining sales, the volume of traffic was increasing. Looking at 2023 as a whole, overall performance was comparable to the period during the initial outbreak of the pandemic, with not much improvement. Total sales in the art market fell by 4% year by year, dropping to $65 billion. This figure was the lowest since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. Therefore, galleries were eagerly anticipating a rebound in the art market in 2024 at the end of last year.

Online art sales increased

Since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, many collectors have also developed a habit of collecting artwork online. This has brought about a different breakthrough in online purchasing for the art market. Global online sales increased by 7% year over year, reaching an estimated $11.8 billion in 2023. Although this figure didn't match the historic peak of the online market at $13.3 billion in 2021, sales still more than doubled the levels of 2019—or any year before that.

However, Art fairs continue to serve as a crucial avenue for connecting galleries with new collectors

As online art sales surge, art fairs retain their significance as essential platforms for connecting with both new collectors and artists alike. However, a lot of galleries have been complaining about how the cost is relatively high it became a barrier to entry to the art fair. The costs associated with shipping works, transporting and lodging team members, and purchasing installation materials make art fairs expensive endeavors. The majority of galleries that do not participate in international art fairs cite cost as the primary reason. Those galleries that choose not to participate often opt for online selling or working through dealers. They had hoped that sales would increase in 2024.

Next, I'll be researching female artists who have garnered significant attention in the art scene. Honestly speaking, I feel that when I purchase an artwork, my decision isn't primarily influenced by the identity of the artist; rather, it's usually the artwork itself that captivates me. Subsequently, I became interested in learning more about the artist behind the piece. What are your thoughts on this approach?

The sixth edition of ONE ART Taipei, a leading art fair in Asia, took place from January 26 to 28, at the JR East Metro Park Taipei Hotel. The fair also featured a new exhibition called "Voices" at the historic POPOP Taipei (瓶蓋工廠台北製造所) in Nangang.

ONE ART Taipei 2024 will feature 72 exhibitors, including 41 domestic galleries and 31 international galleries from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and France. Among the participating galleries, 21 are newly joining One Art this time, with 11 of them being international galleries.

The fair showcased a wide range of contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures, photography, and multimedia works. From established artists to emerging talent.

ONE ART Taipei is a major event for the art world in Asia. The fair provides a platform for galleries to showcase their work to a global audience and for collectors to discover new art.

The first academic curation exhibition, 'Voices,' is set to take place in the emerging cultural and creative district, POPOP Taipei (瓶蓋工廠台北製造所). 'Voices' emphasizes a layout without exhibition boards and gaps, aiming to highlight the spirit and thoughts of each artist through thoughtful planning, not confined to the aesthetic value of a single artwork. With various voices and individual expressions, reflecting the trend of contemporary diverse living, art is presented with more intuition and profound beauty, freely showcasing distinctive features.

ONE ART Taipei team hopes to open a new possible chapter for Taiwan's art industry through the curation of 'Voices.'

In contrast to the intricate artworks at the ONE ART Taipei exhibition, 'Voices' focuses more on presenting works in the integration of diverse media such as 'large-scale sculptures,' 'installation art,' and 'sound performances.' Founded on academic curation, 'Voices' invites seasoned curators to plan the exhibition theme with artwork concepts as the axis and academic discourse as the latitude.
